Miley Cyrus’ ‘Bangerz’ Hit or Miss?
After much anticipation, Miley Cyrus’ fourth studio album, Bangerz, was debuted on October 4, 2013. Cyrus has described the sound of her newest album as “dirty south hip-hop”. The album consists of 13 tracks, all of which range from eccentric hip-hop to heart-clenching ballads and features artists such as Britney Spears and rappers Big Sean, French Montana, Ludacris, and Nelly. There has been much controversy regarding Cyrus’ new, edgy sound and of course her newly found risque image; to which parents of young adults aren’t sure they approve of.
The record opens with “Adore You”, a tear jerking love ballad that showcases her incredible vocal abilities and which was inspired by ex-fiancé, Liam Hemsworth. However, as the tracks progess, Miley’s good girl Disney days seem to be stuffed in the back of a closet and clearly left to beforgotten. In “We Can’t Stop”, Miley sings about drugs such as Molly, a popular party drug among teens, and clearly references the use of cocaine, saying “trying to get a line in the bathroom”. These lyrics cause Miley to be the subject of much criticism, yet she does not seem to be bothered.
“Bangerz” presents a new image of Miley Cyrus, and it is evident that she is attemping her hardest to get away from her old Hannah Montana alter ego and start a new path in the music industry for herself.
Is Miley Cyrus’ new portrayal and sound inspiring or is it a train wreck?
