20 and pregnant sounds like an MTV reality show, but perhaps it’s the best thing to happen to Media Influencer Kylie Jenner. Has the birth of her first child changed Kylie and her boyfriend rapper Travis Scott’s lives for the better, or is the heavy cargo of caring for a child too much for the young couple?

Madyson  (opening):

20-year-old star, Kylie Jenner, gave birth to a baby girl, Stormi Webster, on February 1, 2018.  Seeing posts all over social media, it’s hard to deny that Stormi is Kylie’s newest obsession. As a massive influence to young adults, Kylie has made young motherhood seem effortlessly glorious and the destination for all women, but the reality is she is too young to raise baby Stormi.

Kaya (opening):

I, personally, think that it’s irresponsible to place the burden of future generations on one single person. Teen pregnancy has been glamorized for almost a decade now due to shows such as “Teen Mom”, which was released in 2009. Although I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of the Kardashian/Jenners, it seems unfair to call Kylie Jenner out as a sole reason for teen pregnancy rates increasing. The teen birth rate has actually been decreasing since the 1990s. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the birth rate per 1,000 females aged 15-19 has decreased from its highest point of 61.8 in 1991 to 24.2 in 2014. This leads me to become less concerned about Jenner’s effect on teens today.

M (point 1):

On the other hand, Kylie is not married and, according to People TV Watch, is in no rush. However, Kylie has been wearing a ring from Travis that was given to her when she was first pregnant. The ring has several emerald-cut diamonds, and makes a major statement when she is seen with it on. Yet, this ring is not an engagement ring, a wedding ring, or even a promise ring. According to inside family sources, Stormi is their only priority right now. The question then comes up as, who will take care of the child? Is it Kylie’s responsibility or Travis’? This is where the lines blur when a child comes into the life of an unmarried couple.

K (rebuttal point 1):

There’s no proof that Kylie and Travis have separated, in fact, it seems to be the opposite. They’re stronger than ever and their relationship is about to reach the one year milestone- a point in time where many relationships tend take the next step: marriage. Also, is making Stormi their number one priority really a bad thing? Kylie has a huge support system in her sisters and mother, so if anything were to occur between Kylie and Travis, she’d have people to fall back on. Both have shown that they will be able to take care of this child and want what’s best for her.

M (point 2):

New mother, Kylie Jenner, turned 20 years of age on August 10, 2017. Being a young adult comes with many new responsibilities: bills, college, work, and personal health. Not only has Kylie had to take on some of these responsibilities, she now has the weight of raising a child. Children require another long list of needs and wants, something that Kylie has personally. Her family and the public agree that the spoiled 20-year-old is not prepared to take on the challenges of her own life, much less the life of another.

K (rebuttal point 2):

Kylie Jenner tried to keep her pregnancy as private as possible. Throughout countless speculations, neither Jenner nor her family confirmed this pregnancy in an effort to keep it concealed. She came out on twitter, a few days after she gave birth to first daughter Stormi, to tell fans that she didn’t mean to keep them in the dark but wanted what was best for herself and her baby during that time. Placing the health and well-being of her unborn child above the publicity she could easily gained- from booking talk shows about her pregnancy to posting pictures about it- seems pretty mature.

M (point 3):

Rich parents raise rich kids. The youngest Jenner is in an incredibly privileged position. A star, like herself, can have all the money in the world but still raise an awful human being. The children grow up without seeing the stress of electricity bills and saving up for college throughout their whole life. Their famous high-class lives are not ran around a school calendar, Kylie herself dropped out of traditional school at 15 to become homeschooled, and work around her busy schedule of a rising star. Also, with a Television show being constantly filmed in their house, is the environment ideal for raising a child? Rich children never live the same lives as the general public, no matter the parent’s morals.

K (rebuttal point 3):

Jenner never asked to be placed in the public’s eye the way she is, yet, I do acknowledge that she embraces it; she seems rather opportunistic. She used her fame to create a cosmetics empire that’s about to reach a selling point of half a billion dollars and is set to reach 1 billion by 2022. This is a huge feat for the company considering it took almost 80 years for L’Oréal’s Lancôme line to reach that point. On the point of schooling, no one should be shamed because they were not sent to a public school with other children. Nowadays, plenty of typical American minors take classes online instead of attending traditional school.

M (closing):

Kylie Jenner is too young, too rich, and too unreliable to raise the next Jenner for the eye of the public. Without the last name, where would Kylie and the entire family be?

K (closing):

Overall, we must respect that this was something Kylie wanted. It’s not anyone’s place to comment on the way she chooses to raise her child when she’s not causing her any harm.
