Overeating on Super Bowl Sunday
The stage is set for Super Bowl LI, as frontrunner for MVP Matt Ryan leads the Atlanta Falcons against future Hall of Famer Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. While the game itself is always awesome and the commercials always give us a good laugh, the great part about Super Bowl Sunday is the amazing food parties and tailgates that go on every year.
According to the Department of Agriculture, Super Bowl Sunday is the second largest food consumption day in America, only behind Thanksgiving. Some of the most popular foods that fans snack on throughout the day include burgers, chips with queso or guacamole, nachos, pizza, cookies, and much more. But arguably the most popular food on game day is wings.
According to the National Chicken Council (NCC), Americans are expected to eat 1.33 billion chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday. As for specific restaurants, Karim Webb, who owns several Buffalo Wild Wings franchises, says that each location sells around 6,000 wings on an average weekend, and that number doubles to greater than 12,000 over Super Bowl Weekend. Wing Zone, an Atlanta based restaurant chain that specializes in buffalo wings, expects to sell around 450,000 chicken wings nationwide on Sunday.
While chicken wings are always common, pizza places are always busy delivering pizzas all day long. Per RetailMeNot.com, Americans will buy 12.5 million pizzas on Sunday, with an average order value of $26.45. And during January, Pizza Hut announced that they were going to hire around 11,000 employees in time for the Super Bowl. Other huge portions of foods include over 100 million pounds of avocado to be used in making guacamole, and over $200 million spent on potato chips.
Lots of people have different favorite types of food that they love eating the most on Super Bowl Sunday.
“In my opinion, nachos are the best food to eat during the Super Bowl,” Faith Lutheran senior Patrick Wiegand said. “I also really enjoy eating chili, and cookies are the best dessert for the game.”
“Hot wings and chips with guacamole are classics,” Rob Allen said. “My dad also grills amazing burgers that taste awesome every year for the Super Bowl.
