Assassin’s Creed Movie Review
Assassin’s Creed follows the story of Callum Lynch played by Michael Fassbender who travels back in time to 15th-century Spain through The Animus, a machine that unlocks the genetic memories contained in his DNA. There, he lives out the experiences of Aguilar de Nerha, a distant relative who’s also a member of the Assassins, a secret society that fights to protect free will from the power-hungry Templar Order. Transformed by the past, Callum begins to gain the knowledge and physical skills necessary to battle the oppressive organization, Abstergo in the present.
The movie Assassin’s Creed is based off the popular video game series that is universally loved by a lot of people. However, Assassin’s Creed continues the tradition of video game movies being absolute trash. Assassin’s Creed has a great ensemble cast and some material that could work great as a movie but unfortunately, that does not save this mess from completely failing. The movie manages to get bad performances from Michael Fassbender, Marion, Cotillard, and Jeremy Irons who are all Academy Award winners or nominees. When Callum enters The Animus, all the action that takes place in it has no meaning to the story. The final time he goes in The Animus, the action has purpose but it’s the only time where the action scenes matter! The writing is mediocre and the pacing is clunky. Nothing really seems to work for the movie and it puts a shadow over the game series. I find it hard to believe that this got made into a movie before more story rich games like Halo or Fallout. Hopefully in the future, a good video game movie will get made but Assassin’s Creed was definitely not the one.
Assassin’s Creed was the least enjoyable movie I’ve seen in 2016. I give Assassin’s Creed a 3.2/10.
