Moonlight Movie Review
Moonlight is a timeless story of human self-discovery and connection; Moonlight chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami.
Moonlight is directed and written by Barry Jenkins. Moonlight is a masterwork as it tells a very human story. The story is told in 3 parts as a young Chiron grows up in a rough neighborhood in Miami. The story starts of as Chiron as a little boy. He meets a Sympathetic Drug Dealer named Juan played by Mahershala Ali, who basically raises him as his mother played by Naomi Harris, is a crack addict and she doesn’t take care of him the way she should. He also befriends Kevin, a kid who understands that Chiron is probably tough and tells him that he should stand up from himself. As the story progresses Chiron starts to discover himself in an environment that doesn’t accept who he is. The story follows 3 stages of his life as he goes from kid to teenager to man. This movie is a better version of Boyhood that came out in 2014. The kid in that movie has a relatively okay life but opposed to Moonlight where he grows up struggling with his own identity and has a pretty bad life. There isn’t anything that seems out of place with this movie. All three actors who play Chiron did a phenomenal job. This movie is heart breaking as you watch Chiron grow up to be someone who hides who he is. This movie deserves more awards than its getting but this movie is truly a master work. Moonlight isn’t a movie I see myself watching over again many times but it still is a great film.
Moonlight is in my eyes, a master piece. I cant find a single thing I didn’t like so I give it a 10/10!
