Fences Movie Review
Fences follows the story Troy Maxson played by Denzel Washington who makes his living as a sanitation worker in 1950s Pittsburgh. Maxson once dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player, but was deemed too old when the major leagues began admitting black athletes. Bitter over his missed opportunity, Troy creates further tension in his family when he squashes his son’s chance to meet a college football recruiter.
Fences is based on a play of the same name written by August Wilson. The movie is great even though it is mostly dialogue because it is based on a play. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis give outstanding performances as they seem like they give there all. Denzel did a great job of being likable in the first half and then very unlikable in the 2nd much like his performance is Training Day. Viola deserves and Oscar for her performance as it may be her best. She gave so much when she cried in the film she had a great deal of tears and and snot. Denzel also does a phenomenal job directing. The Maxon’s Son, Corey played by Jovan Adepo was also very good for a fairly new actor. He wasn’t in the movie much but his acting was really good. There isn’t really much of a description of the movie without giving spoilers so I say this is a must see.
The performances in fences were top notch and Denzel’s direction is superb. I give fences a 9.5/10.
