Starbucks cup debacle

Tis’ the season for Starbucks controversy. In the past, Starbucks received hate from social media users on the color of its holiday cups. The recent release of the green Starbucks cup caused disagreement across Twitter and other popular social media websites. Most dedicated Starbucks customers shared their complaints after Howard Schultz, Starbucks’ CEO, announced the coffee chain’s new green cups on November 1.

Schultz explained the new design, an image of over one hundred faces drawn in one pencil stroke, as a reminder of our “shared values and the need to be good to each other”. The cup, Schultz said, was created as a symbol of unity during the heated election.

Many Starbucks fans believe the cup is replacing the annual red holiday cups and are outraged. One upset customer tweeted the cup is “political brainwashing” and demanded the want for “snowflakes”. Last year, a similar debate started when some customers claimed the cups were too moderate, while others were upset that the polar bear cookies had red scarves that appeared to show their throats cut.

“First Starbucks doesn’t support Christmas and now they encourage killing polar bears. smh,” one person tweeted.

It seems as Starbucks will never be able to satisfy 100% of its customers. With their cups and cookies being either “triggering” or “frightening”. Are the cups political? Or are they simply an intricate piece of artwork?
