Students flood community park during reunification drill
At 9 o’clock this morning, Faith Lutheran had its first reunifications drill. This drill is similar to a fire drill; but teaches students what to do if the police need to evacuate the whole school. The drill required almost 1,800 students and faculty members to walk out to their designated fire drill spot with their first block teachers, and then move to the community park across the street and stay in a single file line with their advisor.
“It is sad that we have to do this, but at least we are not prepared and know,” said senior, Sam Aizenberg.
This walk across campus is well known to all students who have had Miss Heimlich for British Literature or Applied Christianity. She takes short walks during class to get students reenergized for class during the middle of a long lecture.
“It was done well… it will be easier [in a real emergency] because the first time we did it wouldn’t be when all the students were panicked,” said teacher Miss Heimlich.
This drill trained students on what to do in a serious or dangerous situation. However, some students had a more humorous outlook on the mile and a half walk.
“I think this drill is like for if there is a fire or a chemical spill on campus and we have to be reunited with our parents. Either that or they think we are all fat and we need exercise,” said freshman Devyn Blaylock.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of Faith Lutheran, Dr. Steve Buuck, “Things went fairly smoothly from my perspective. We will likely do our next reunification drill sometime next fall.”
Students and teachers agree that the drill went better than expected. In case of a serious emergency, students who live closer than the park are tempted to go home rather than stay with their advisors.
“I would’ve walked home because it personally would’ve been a shorter distance, and I would have more comfort knowing I have a roof over my head, “ said senior Carolyn DiPasquale.
For students who live in the houses next to Faith Lutheran, stay on campus with your advisors until told otherwise. Faith is held accountable for every student and the administration needs to keep track of everyone to insure the safety of everyone, which is the ultimate goal of these practice drills.
