Faith’s Homecoming Dance Meets Serious Demand
Faith Lutheran’s Homecoming Dance has met critical acclaim from students and faculty for the past few years due to the fantastic decorations, great food, thrilling music, and elated students. This past year, the homecoming dance sold out completely and this year’s dance is no different. However, the demand to attend the special event from the student body has continued to increase despite sold out results. In a Faith Lutheran first, the student leadership team created a waitlist for additional students who turned in their homecoming forms later rather than sooner. Student Life Director, Mrs. Julie Buuck, agreed to put students on a waitlist after the 500-seat limit sold out.
“Right now we have 500 seats reserved, and I’m not sure if the rental company can provide any more chairs. There’s not much more room in the gym to put another kid. Also, we have to give the catering company and the renting companies a number count for how many students we’re expecting. It’s incredibly difficult to guarantee that we will have enough tables, chairs, linens, knives, forks, and spoons for everyone. Five other schools are having homecoming this weekend and we’re all renting from the same places, so it makes it very difficult. If the rental place can provide enough stuff to grant the amount of students on the waitlist entrance, then I’ll be able to take everybody. If I can’t, then I have to say no and it’s out of our hands. One extra person can throw the whole thing off,” said Buuck.
Certain students that were placed on the waitlist were not amused. Faith senior, Lydia Pejovic, decided to make other plans on the special night, just in case she couldn’t get into the dance.
“My boyfriend and I bought tickets to see The Book of Mormon at The Smith Center and made dinner reservations instead, since attending the dance wasn’t guaranteed.”
However, Mrs. Buuck announced some surprising information three days before the dance. Fortunately for all of the students on the waitlist, the companies were able to provide enough supplies for the additional 85 students. All students on the waitlist are granted entrance into the dance. Although, students similar to Lydia aren’t attending the dance even though they’re allowed to go.
“I’m still going to The Book of Mormon because I’d rather go there instead of the dance. I made those plans because I wasn’t sure if we were going to be let into the dance. I think they announced it too late.”
Even though Mrs. Buuck was fortunate enough to let all students on the waitlist into the dance, she’s changing things up for the following homecoming dance.
“Next year, I think I’m going to make the deadline to turn in forms a whole week before the dance. The most aggravating part about this is that tickets have been on sale since September 9. We even gave people a head’s up on the form that we sold out last year. I’d love to let everybody in, but sometimes you just can’t. It’s a life lesson.”
Faith Lutheran’s Storybook Homecoming Dance will take place at the Faith Lutheran gymnasium and amphitheater on October 3, 2015. With 588 students reserved at the dance, it could lead to an incredibly memorable night, or a jammed one.
