The official UNLV account shared a post yesterday on the app X at around 11:53 am with the warning, “University Police responding to report of shots fire in the BEH evacuate to a safe area, RUN-HIDE-FIGHT.” News broke out everywhere of a potential mass shooter in one of the classroom buildings on campus. UNLV shared another post just 6 minutes after the first report stating “University Police responding to confirmed active shooter in BEH. This is not a test. RUN-HIDE-FIGHT”
By this time, news had been reported across the Vegas valley had silenced the city as families everywhere waited for the next report on the shooting. Las Vegas police confirmed an active shooter situation at 12:04 pm, and also confirmed that officers were responding to the reports. Along with their response to the situation, they shared this devastating news “There appears to be multiple victims at this time. Please avoid the area at this time.” Around an hour after that post, the LVMPD confirmed that the suspect had been detained and was killed at the scene of the crime. Students were advised to remain in their shelter in place by the Police and the Official UNLV account, where they would be escorted from their hiding place one by one, building by building.
At this point of the situation, there had still been no confirmation on how many people had been killed or injured. The UMC level one trauma unit on W Charleston Blvd, Las Vegas was the closest to the scene at the time, and had reported at around 1:48 that they had “not received any patients from the UNLV shooting.” The people that were injured did end up being taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center on Maryland Pkwy.
The LVMPD held a press conference that night at 5:00 pm that would be televised to the public. Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill and Governor Joe Lombardo stated that the situation was no longer considered a threat to the UNLV campus and the surrounding area. They have also identified the suspect after he had passed, but weren’t officially releasing names at the time. The link to that press conference is posted under this story. The Faith Lutheran Middle School and High School community sends prayers to the friends and family of the victims and to anyone affected by the shooting.
