As the school season starts, many fun events happen again. Faith had its annual Homecoming Saturday, September 30. This year, the dance was an Alice and Wonderland theme, including a maze, food trucks, and a dance floor.
It was a very chilly night out where student council transformed the entire soccer field into Alice’s Wonderland. The way some students warmed up from the cold was dancing on the dance floor with tons of other attendees. The dance floor included a DJ who kept on playing hit songs that would hype the crowd up. The songs he played included throwback, dance, and more recent popular songs. Anytime during the night, wherever everyone was, they could hear the music and see the lights from the dance floor. The dance floor was covered by a big white tent, which let the lights reflect on the white, making it look like there was a colorful ceiling.
Mizara Norton, a senior out-of-school attendee, said, “The dance floor was a blast, and I even got to try out some of my new dance moves.” During some songs, the Faith crowd would open into a circle and have a student or two go in the middle and show off their moves. One of the most excellent moves during the night was students doing backflips and the worm. The dance floor appears at every dance and never disappoints. When the music went out for a few minutes, and the DJ started having technical difficulties, the students began booing immediately.
This year’s food trucks had a variety of food for everyone to pick out of. Every student got a wristband when they entered, which allowed them to get a meal and dessert items. This year, the food group options were Cactus Jacks, Sticky Iggy’s, Tiki’s, and Snow Paradise. Next to the food trucks, they had tables for attendees to sit at and enjoy the food. Finding a table to sit at was hard because all the seats were nearly taken.
Grace Hunt, a senior at Faith, got shaved ice from Tikis and said, “Their flavors for the shaved ice are amazing, and I hope to see them come back again.” The food this year described by everyone was rated very good or just average. “I always love how at the dances there are tables right next to the food truck, making it easy to sit and enjoy my food,” Emma Herpin, a junior at Faith, said, “Personally, I ate a plain cheeseburger with fries from Cactus Jacks. I thought the food was an 8 out of 10 because I had had better, but it was perfect for a school event.”
Every year, there is something different based on the theme for each Homecoming and this year, there was a maze. Students would go through the maze and, at the end, try to unlock the lock with the key they had been given when entering the maze. According to Ms. Seals, a Spanish teacher helping with the maze, close to 25 students won the prize. The prize was a stuffed rabbit and they won if the key they were given fit into the lock. The stuffed rabbit fits the homecoming theme perfectly by relating to The White Rabbit, a main character in the movie Alice and Wonderland.
“I was shocked that I won the stuffed animal because they give everyone different keys, and I was not expecting my key to be the winner,” Vannessa Phillips, a senior at Faith, shares happily with her new stuffed animal in her hand. The maze differed from any other event I had seen at the homecoming dance.
The weather at the dance was freezing; much wind made many girls wear their date’s jacket over their dresses. Other girls came prepared and brought a jacket to wear over their dresses. Overall, the homecoming dance this year was a blast. A huge thank you to the Student Council for taking hours of their time to plan this event. The effort they put into this event was well-spent. Hopefully, they can find a way to top this for the next dance.
